The University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) is excited to announce the launch of a new data package initiative in partnership with Telecel, aimed at providing affordable and reliable internet access to students.
Originally conceived by the Boakye-Lincoln-led SRC administration, this initiative was further refined and presented to university management by the Tsikata-Zanyoh-led administration. After receiving approval in the latter part of the 2023/24 academic year, the implementation faced delays due to leadership transitions in October 2024. However, the project is now ready to roll out, benefiting the entire student body.
How the Telecel Data Package Works
In an exclusive interview with Campus Exclusive, former UGSRC President Mr. Frank Tsikata revealed that the initiative was created to complement existing Wi-Fi services on campus, particularly in areas with weak connectivity or during vacation periods when students are away.
For incoming first-year students, the data package will be included in their academic fees. Continuing students, however, will see the data package billed separately starting from the second semester. UGSRC Vice President Jeffrey Adu-Yeboah (JayLit) assured that the current SRC is committed to maintaining the cost of the package at the agreed-upon rate, without increases from market fluctuations, until a formal policy review.
JayLit also highlighted that future administrations may explore the possibility of increasing the monthly data allocation based on student needs and market conditions. “We’re starting with 5GB, but I’m hopeful that in the future, the policy will be reviewed to increase this to 10GB or more,” he said.
What’s Included in the Telecel Data Package
Telecel’s package for University of Ghana students offers a variety of benefits to enhance connectivity. According to Fred Torkornoo, Telecel’s Line Manager for Educational Institutions in Ghana, students will enjoy:
- 5GB of monthly data with a rollover option for up to three months
- Unlimited on-net calls (within the Telecel network) without the need for airtime
- 200 minutes for on-net calls
- 10 minutes for off-net calls monthly
- 50 free SMS units (a bonus for those who still use text messaging)
Should students run out of data, they can purchase additional bundles at discounted rates—about 60% lower than the commercial prices—via a special code.
“Currently, the package provides 5GB of data, and any unused data rolls over to the next month, valid for up to three months. We also offer 200 minutes for on-net calls, 10 minutes for off-net calls, and 50 SMS, which can come in handy,” explained Mr. Torkornoo. This package mirrors similar offerings at KNUST, ensuring competitive benefits.
Improving Connectivity on Campus
Addressing concerns about connectivity in certain areas of the campus, Mr. Torkornoo shared that Telecel has been working to strengthen the network with the installation of new towers. “We’ve identified 15 sites for upgrades, eight of which are now fully operational. We are also enhancing connectivity in 14 hostels, ensuring better network quality for students across the university.”
What About Graduates?
One common concern raised by students was the potential loss of access to the package upon graduation. JayLit reassured that students can continue using the package for up to a year after finishing their studies, keeping the SIM active during that period.
How to Access the Package
The data package will be available through dedicated SIM cards, which will be distributed to first-year students once they report to campus. Additionally, e-SIM options will be made available to those who prefer a digital alternative.
This new initiative aims to make staying connected on campus easier and more affordable, and UGSRC is excited to provide this valuable service to the student body. Keep an eye out for further details as the package becomes available in the coming months!
